This large female rhino was once the target of poachers, as can be seen by the unhealed bullet wound in the middle of her forehead. The bullet is still lodged inside but it doesn’t seem to bother her. The staff keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t get infected and a vet checks it every time they have to sedate her for a dehorning. Every time you notice it, it’s a stark reminder of the precarious life that these animals live. To the delight of everyone on the reserve, she gave birth in 2020. There are now two rhinos where there could have been none.
